"Transformations" | Pop-up exhibition at Fredriksborg in Oslo, October 17-19

Published September 2, 2025

October 17th in Fredriksborg's stately premises on Bygdø, we present twenty-six painters and illustrators at the pop-up exhibition "Transformations".

Join us and experience metamorphoses that whisper the difference between animals and humans. Bodily associations and intermediate states in the twilight light. Dust, soil and oil transformed into depictions of life's transformative moments - seen through the poetic gaze.

The hour of transformation has come. We are approaching All Hallows' Eve and the return of the dead. Meanwhile, our planet is passing through the insidious Taurid meteor shower, which has caused upheaval on Earth for thousands of years.

And while the asteroids fly over Fredriksborg on the opening night, Bork Nerdrum will premiere his retelling of a grotesque family drama from the Roman poet Ovid's Metamorphoses – a comprehensive work that deals with the transformations in Greek myths. Here, people are transformed into animals, bushes and trees by compassionate as well as vengeful deities.

Birth and death are the great transformations that humans must go through, but all transformations have something in common. In Norway, we have the legend of Askeladden, who goes from ashes to gold, from horror to the princess and half the kingdom. In other fairy tales, it is the animals that are transformed, as is the case with the frog prince who retrieves the golden ball from the well. The motifs vary, but the message is the same:

Only through ashes, hardship, and darkness can transformation occur.
